Caribou - Heaven gained a special crafty angel and surely became a much more decorated place when Susan E. McCarthy, 56, passed away October 29, 2019 at Caribou after a brief illness. She was born in Caribou, April 18, 1963 the daughter of the late Frederick and Gloria (Johnson) Sandstrom.
Sue attended the Stockholm and New Sweden schools and was a 1981 graduate of Caribou High School. Following graduation, she was employed at Northern National Bank, owned and operated McCarthy's Sub Shop for a number of years and then was employed by Noyes, Phil's, and Thistle Flower shops. Sue was a member of the Gustaf Adolph Lutheran Church and also attended the Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Sue loved the outdoors, especially camping, snowmobiling and fishing with her family and friends. She truly loved spending an evening at Cross Lake watching the sunset. Sue always loved her annual girls get-away with the YaYas. She also spent several years living in Big Lake, Alaska, where she made many new friends and memories. Many will fondly remember Sue for her talented craftsmanship, taking seemingly simple objects and turning them into works-of-art. She had many talents, including painting on many objects from discarded ice skates to old window panes, screens and doors.
She is survived by her son Chad McCarthy and Fiancé Bekah Smith; and her daughter and son-in-law Allyson and Douglas Bell II all of Caribou; her beloved grandchildren Lilly and Will Bell and Ivy McCarthy; her significant other Michael Thompson of Caribou; three brothers, Scott Sandstrom of Stockholm, Shawn Sandstrom and wife Hope of New Sweden, Simon Sandstrom and wife April of Gorham; a sister-in-law, Sally Sandstrom of New Sweden; her former husband Michael McCarthy; and a special mother-in-law Doreen McCarthy, who so lovingly, along with the rest of the McCarthy clan, took such good care of Sue the past few weeks at Meme's house. Several nieces and nephews and numerous special close friends.
Sue was predeceased by her parents and her brother Steven.
Friends called at Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir Street, Caribou, 6 - 8 p.m., Friday, November 1, 2019. Funeral services were held Saturday, 2 p.m. from the Gustaf Adolph Church with Rev. Robert Smith officiating. Interment will be in the New Sweden Cemetery.
