Steven E. Marr Obituary
Woodland, Maine - It is with unimaginable sorrow that we share news of the passing of our father, Steven E. Marr, January 7, 1944 - August 29, 2026, a quietly remarkable man who lived an exemplary life. Born to Lila (Webber) and Harold Marr in Washburn, Dad was blessed to be raised by his mother and ultimate father, Frederick "Ted" Martin, who helped instill a strong moral code, family values, a tireless work ethic, and unmatched sense of humor.
Attending Washburn schools, he met, tormented, fell in love with and ultimately won over the heart of the youngest "Earle girl," Judy. As babies themselves, they married in 1961 and began their beautiful 65-year journey into married life and parenthood living with Mom's parents, Phyllis (Haines) and John "Frasier" Earle, who Dad loved, respected, and teased as though they were his own parents. In return, they treasured him as their own son and continued the work started by his parents as he grew into a remarkable husband and father. On all sides he was blessed with wonderful parents to shepherd him through life, and we owe them a great debt of gratitude.
Make no mistake, Dad's first priority was Mom, closely followed by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His love for and support of his family was life-long and steadfast. Especially in the last few years, he expressed daily to each of us how profoundly he loved and took pride in his family. His morning calls became the stuff of legend that will be a source of comfort as we navigate life without him. (And yes, Dad, we will continue to be safe and keep our doors locked!) He was as loved and admired as any man could be by his wife, daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He led by example, always making us want to do better and be better people. His generosity and mentorship extended beyond his family. Throughout our lives and still today, each of us has been approached by someone sharing a story of how Dad inspired them or in some way lifted them up during a time of need. He never spoke of these acts, so we will never know the full scope of his generosity.
Shortly after marrying, Dad began working for neighbor Ralph Irving, thus beginning his journey into potato farming, the second great love of his life. After several years of working for Ralph and with the encouragement of Ralph's son, Alan Irving, Irving & Marr Farms was born. It was through this partnership that Dad helped the farm evolve into a larger, more modern and highly-respected farming operation. Dad's farming legacy continued with M & B Farms with partner, Robbie Blackstone, until his retirement in 2016. How he loved farming! It was never just a job to him but ran through his veins like blood, farming vicariously through others until his last breath. Dad created lifelong bonds in the farming community and loved discussing all things farming, most notably with grandson, Sam; friend, Mark Zagranis; and neighbors and friends, Steve Demcheck, and Tommy, Sharon, and Kyle Atcheson. His conversations with Tommy and Kyle, offering advice when it was sought, leant meaning to his retirement and was as important to him as it was to them.
Mom was Dad's equal and life partner in every sense of the word, and his accomplishments were only possible through her support. Side by side while growing the farm, they created a home and raised four daughters, Lori, Cheryl, Janet, and JoAnna. There were good-natured jokes that having all girls must have been bad luck for a farmer who probably wanted some sons, but Dad wouldn't have changed a thing. He always took immense joy in his family, ever our champion and hero. Naturally, Dad had more free time when his 12 grandchildren and later their children filled out the family, and he took full advantage of that, creating bonds with each and every one of them. He was a devoted grandfather and great-grandfather, and always a source of support, advice, and humor. His were often the first arms run to when children ran into the house, and he treasured each one as dearly as his own children. Sundays at Mom and Dad's were (and will continue to be) a treasured ritual and time of renewal. Always filled with conversation, laughter, running gags ("Did you have enough to eat? There's plenty of food out there.") and great food. If you were blessed to be part of this tradition, you understand how truly unique and treasured it is.
Dad was predeceased by his parents and parents-in-law; and brothers, Harold Marr and John Marr. He is survived by his wife of 65-years, the only woman he ever loved, Judy Marr; his daughters, Lori Marr and her partner, Alicia, and children, Katie, Steven, and Leslie, and greats, Tyler, Grace, and Emmie; Cheryl Hallowell and husband, Dana, and her children, Melissa and Jennifer, and greats, Laura, Kendall, Charlotte, and Riley; Janet Marr and significant other, Mark, and her children, Steven, Sam, Gabi, Elijah and Joshua, and great Bella; JoAnna Cole and husband, Matthew, who was a son to Dad in every sense of the word and mourns him as deeply as his children, and their children, Meghan and Ryan; his sister, Carla Rossignol and her husband, Bryant, and their family; sister Ruth Marr Mitchell and her family; and sisters-in-law, Norma and Ronald Sperrey, Anita Wheeler, and Dawn Walker, and their families.
Dad was so appreciative of the wonderful care he received at Northern Light Health in Presque Isle, particularly from Tom B, Jarrett O, and Dr. Boma, as well as hospice support from Lisa, Dana, Dawn, and Bree, and PT Natalie G. He expressed this to each of you individually, but we as his family wanted to share our appreciation for your care, empathy, respect, and humor. You made an unbearable situation a bit easier to bear, and we are eternally grateful.
At Dad's request, there will be no services. He made it clear to his family how he would prefer that we celebrate his life, and we will take great pride and joy in honoring his wishes and his legacy for the remainder of our lives. As a family, we have been truly blessed to have him as our husband, father ,and grandfather. In his honor, please repair relationships and create strong bonds with your family. There is never enough time.
Those wishing to share a token of remembrance may consider making a donation to Washburn Boy Scout Troop #177, c/o Matt Cole, 232 Davis Rd., Woodland, ME 04736. Arrangements have been entrusted to Bowers Funeral Home in Presque Isle. Online condolences may be shared at bowersfuneral.com.
