Mars Hill, Maine - Richard H. Long, 73, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at his home, after a brief illness. He was born June 19, 1952, in Woodstock, N.B., Canada, the son of Lorne Leslie and Gladys Ferne (Brewer) Long.
Richard grew up in Mars Hill and graduated from Central Aroostook High School in 1970. He started working as a produce manager for Rideout's Market. In 1979 he purchased the first of several tractor trailer trucks and operated as M&J Transport and leased to McCain Transport. In 1989 he purchased a dump truck, which he operated for years and also hauled potatoes for M.E. Grass & Sons during the winter. In the late 1990s, Richard sold the dump truck to A.E. McQuade & Sons and worked for them as a heavy equipment operator. In 2006 Richard went to work at Steelstone Industries as a heavy equipment operator until his illness in November 2025.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Myrna L. (Beckwith) Long; sons, Mark A. Long (Susie) of Dover, NH, and Joe R. Long (Molly) of Mapleton; five grandchildren, Wyatt (10), Mackenzie (8), McKinley (7), Zoe (7), and Rylan (6); and sisters-in-law, Evelyn Long of Hartland, NB, and Cheryl Cray of Easton, ME. Richard also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, Richard was predeceased by siblings, Charlene Long, Fred Long, Ann McQuade, and Laurene Hallett.
"We started in 1979 with little. The first six months were lean, hauling potatoes. In April 1980, leased to McCain Transport. Little did we know what the future would bring. With the help of good drivers, good management, and perseverance, we have seen many changes and improvements. God has blessed. Special thanks to Myrna, Mark, and Joe."
