Houlton - Merle E. Fenlason, 92, passed away peacefully November 29, 2019 at a Houlton health care facility. Merle was born May 2, 1927, in Calais, the eldest son of George and Gladys (Redding) Fenlason. In 1944, on his seventeenth birthday, he left Princeton High School, enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific Theater.
After the war, he received degrees from Husson College and the University of Maine. He married Jean Polleys of Woodland in 1951 and they had two daughters, Judy Buck and Sandy Cummings. Jean passed away in 1990. In 1996 Merle married Lois McCarthy of Houlton, who predeceased him in 2015. He worked for Great Northern Paper Company and later taught Cooperative Education at Southern Aroostook Vocational Education. Merle was an avid golfer.
In addition to his daughters, he is survived by five grandchildren, Jason Buck, Jenny Carney, Leigh Cummings III, Kate Richmond, and Matt Cummings; four great-grandchildren, Baxter Carney, Tristan Carney, Blake Richmond, and Leigh Cummings IV (Kit); and brothers Gene and John Fenlason.
At his request there will be no services. He will be interred in the Fenlason family plot in Princeton, Maine.
