Presque Isle - Linwood Niles Norton, 91, passed away on Saturday, January 4, 2020 at the House of Comfort in Presque Isle. He was born in Caribou on September 14, 1928, the son of G. Fred and Nellie (McNeal) Norton.
Linwood graduated from Caribou High School then entered UMO at the age of 16 where he studied mechanical engineering. He left college after two years to serve his country in the Army during the Korean War as a code breaker in Japan.
After returning home from the Army, he worked at his father's John Deere dealership in Caribou. During that time he took a once-in-lifetime trip around the country in a Willy's Jeep with his lifelong best friend Iver Soderberg of Caribou. In 1953 Linwood married Marcella Levesque of Keegan, Maine. He then went to Husson where he graduated and became a CPA in 1958.
Linwood worked as a CPA in his own practice until he lost his vision in his 80's. Linwood never took a vacation but enjoyed fly fishing whenever he could. He especially enjoyed fishing with his family on the weekends and became an accomplished fly tyer.
He loved following the weather, studying topographical maps, and knew the woods west of Ashland better than his back yard. He once found an unmapped, very small and cold brook that flowed into Mooseleuk Stream, he later coined it Norton Brook.
Linwood was a frugal person and very private but he loved telling and hearing stories when in small groups. Linwood loved to read, so it was tragic that he lost his vision as he was about to retire. His memory never failed him and was able to recall the specifics of events even into his 90's.
He is survived by his sons: Brian and his wife Millie of Falmouth, Niles of Presque Isle, daughter Linette Poirier and her husband Norm of Winterport, and Scott and his wife Lisa of Presque Isle; Linwood is also survived by seven grandchildren: Sam of Washington D.C., Michael of Boston, Lizzy of Falmouth, Logan of Freeport, and Nick, Ryley and Chase of Presque Isle.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers Kenneth and Frank, his wife Marcella, and his son Keith.
Friends and family may call on Saturday, January 18, 2020 from 1-2pm at Duncan Graves Funeral Home where a Celebration of Life will be held at 2pm with a reception following. Interment will be held in the spring at Evergreen Cemetery in Caribou. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Aroostook House of Comfort.
