Caribou, Maine - Joshua Camille-Frederick Smart, 44, died unexpectedly January 27, 2026, at his Caribou residence. He was born in Heidelberg, Germany, January 28, 1981, the son of Richard and Gayle (Bossie) Smart.
Josh was a 1999 graduate of Caribou High School and earned two bachelor's degrees from the University of Maine at Presque Isle in sports medicine and athletic training. He also received a degree in rehabilitation science from Penn West. He was a self-employed licensed massage therapist, neuromuscular therapist and pain management professional. He was also a federal firearms licensed dealer and gunsmith, owning and operating Delta Defense precision arms. Josh absolutely loved the outdoors, hunting, and fishing. He was also passionate about health, fitness, and bodybuilding.
Surviving in addition to his mother, Gayle (Bossie) Smart of Caribou, and his father, Richard Smart of Owens Crossroads, AL, are one brother, Aaron Smart of Carrollton, TX; half brother, Richard Adam Smart of Charleston, SC; half sisters, Elisha Thomas of Leeds, AL, and Mary Nicole Smart of Winter Park, FL. He is also survived by several aunts and uncles, Sharon Olmstead, Rick Bossie, Craig and Cheryl Bossie, all of Caribou, ME, and T.C. Matthews and Lisa Matthews Essich; cousins, Nicole and husband, Mike Divito, Meagan Bossie and husband, John Thompson of Caribou, Adam Olmstead and partner, Katie Stevens, of Levant, Kaitlyn Bossie and husband, Jimmy Umphrey of Wade, ME, and Andrew Bossie and husband, Gary Wagner, of Portland, ME. Joshua was predeceased by his grandparents, Camille and Therese Bossie, Frederick Hackett, and Mary Lou Murphy; and cousin, Ryan Bossie.
Friends may visit with the family on Friday, February 6, 2026, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir St., Caribou. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at Caribou United Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Kalata, officiating. Following the services, all are invited to a time of continued fellowship and refreshments in the church hall.
