Ashland - Joseph Ernest "Ernie" Cowett, 77, entered into rest Thursday, March 7, 2019, at Northern Light A. R. Gould Hospital, with his loving family at his side. He was born March 23, 1941 in Ashland, a son of the late Linwood and Amelia (Rioux) Cowett.
Ernie served overseas with the US Air Force for 2 1/2 years. Upon his return, he worked several years for Pratt & Whitney in Connecticut before relocating back to his beloved hometown of Ashland. He worked for Great Northern Paper, Portage, over 22 years and Levesque Lumber mill for several years before becoming the Town of Ashland Road Commissioner over 10 years, until his retirement. Ernie was a parishioner of St. Marks Church, Ashland, where he also served on the parish council. He enjoyed spending time in the woods, usually foraging for springtime fiddleheads, liked to do some fishing during his younger years, and helped local farmers during harvest. Faith and family were Ernie's priorities, and he especially cherished visits of his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by: his loving wife of over 53 years, Barbara (McGowan) Cowett of Ashland; two children, Christine Robinson and her husband Thomas of Presque Isle and Matt Cowett of Mapleton; one brother, Alfred Cowett and his wife Ann of Lincoln; five grandchildren, Anna, Megan, Brady, Shaun, and Brielle; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Ernie was predeceased by five sibling, Bernard, Robert, Everett, and Arthur Cowett, and Claudette Christnot.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, March 12, 2019, at St. Mark's Catholic Church, Allen Farm Rd., Ashland. Relatives and friends may greet the family Tuesday morning 9-10:45 AM at the church. In lieu of flowers, donation in Ernie's name may be made to: Central Aroostook Humane Society, 24 Cross St., Presque Isle, ME 04769.
