Mapleton and Ashland - Elwood S. "Butch" Hand, 92, passed away Friday, November 1, 2019, at his residence. He was born July 21, 1927, in Mapleton, the son of James and Opal (Elliott) Hand.
Butch grew up in Mapleton and graduated from Mapleton High School. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in October of 1952. Butch married Alma "Amy" (Bell) Brown in 1954 and they would share may happy years of marriage together. Butch was employed by the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad as a trackman for thirty eight years before retiring. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, skating and skiing. He also liked watching the Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, and Ashland High School sports teams.
He is survived by five children: Harvey L. Brown III and his wife Judy of Presque Isle, Debra St. Thomas and her husband John of Presque Isle, Ruth Turner of Mapleton, Steven Hand of Presque Isle, and Nancy Hon and her husband Tommy of Ellsworth. Butch also leaves behind several grandchildren and great grandchildren, and many great-great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his wife Alma "Amy"; a daughter Bonnie Dean; two brothers: Bernard and Charles Hand; and a sister Irene Quinn.
A graveside service with military honors will be conducted 1 PM Wednesday November 6, 2019 at Southside Cemetery in Mapleton with Pastor Nathan Gardiner officiating. Arrangements in care of Dunn Funeral Home 11 Park St. Houlton, ME 04730. Online condolences may be expressed on the Tribute Wall at:
