Houlton, Maine - Douglas Harold McNutt, 76, died Saturday morning, July 18, 2026, at Houlton Regional Hospital following a brief sudden illness. Doug was born in Houlton on February 5, 1950, the third child of Harold and Phylliss Hardy McNutt.

He graduated from Houlton High School's class of 1968. After high school, Doug enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and proudly served from October 1968 to August 1970. His tour of duty sent him to Vietnam where he achieved the rank of sergeant and earned the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, the Combat Aircrew Insignia with 3 Stars, the Vietnam Service Medal with 1 Star, the Air Medal with 1 Star, the Rifleman Sharpshooter Badge, and the RVN Cross of Gallantry with Palm and Frame.

Following his military service, Doug returned to Maine, purchased a home on Drews Lake, and began his lifelong career as an independent long-haul truck driver. After retiring from the road, Doug spent his days assisting his daughter at her horse farm.

A diehard Elvis fan his entire life, Doug loved music, and had an uncanny knack of spontaneously reciting song lyrics that fit the current conversation, followed up by quizzing everyone about the song's title, its artist, and the year it was released. He knew all those answers, and that made him particularly good at trivia. He loved playing games - especially cribbage, Parcheesi, dominoes, dice, poker, and horseshoes. A competitive player, Doug hated losing, and often sulked when he did. It was fun to beat him.

Doug's other favorite pastimes included reading, listening to music, and playing sudoku and Wordle on his ever-present iPhone. He also enjoyed spending time at Drews Lake kayaking, scuba diving, and snorkeling. He was passionate about baseball, especially the Red Sox, and was a huge fan of Calvin and Hobbes, Coke, Jeep, and Harley-Davidson.

Quiet by nature, Doug had a wicked sense of humor and was known in his family as The King of Snide - a title he wore proudly. His family and friends will remember his sardonic wit, twinkling eyes, and Muttley snicker with great love and fondness. He will be missed. Semper fi, Dougie.

Doug was predeceased by his parents; brothers, James and Gerald; his nephews, Theron James McNutt and Ryan Douglas McNutt. He is survived by his daughter, Jessica York of Houlton; his grandsons, James and Cole; and five siblings, Tana of Drews Lake, Ted (Lori) of Linneus, Joni (Michelle Faoiz) of South Portland, Mark (Pam) of Tumacacori, Arizona, and Bret the Brat (Kim) of Hampden. He is also survived by 16 nieces and nephews, Dennis, Courtney, Jesse, Gretel, Angie, Stacey, Joshua, Kirsten, Jeremy, Karri, Lucas, Sierra, Heath, Dan, Josh, and Sam; 24 great-nieces and great-nephews, Daniel, Hailee, Ethin, Therron, Phoenix, Elyjah, Ella, Sophia, Pano, Isadora, Lauren, Cassidy, Emerald, Georgia, Waylon, Cash, Emily, Rachel, Sara, Jonathan, Bella, Connor, Lily, and Evie; seven great-greats, Kinsley, Daxton, Walter, Louis, Oktavia, Evee, and Iliana; and several cousins and many friends.

A gathering to celebrate Doug's life will be held Saturday, September 5, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the American Legion, 184 Bangor St., Houlton.
